Morning -first draft-

A window opens morning cold on face. Speech slurred, eyelids rising and drooping in time to the shrill whine of whirring blades. Fresh coffee curls in skeins round the lightbulbs, peering petulant jadeite eyes down from its perch above the fridge. Its gaze is indignant, caught surprised at being roused from slumber. Stretch yawn scratch Eyes water, sleep or scalding drink? Morning not-quite-silences reign gurgling pipes, humming machinery, clattering dishes of waking-up ritual. We sit there, listening to the pathetic smallness of sound giving birth to a new day's potential and the stirrings of something bigger. ©Za

Death's Complaint When I look at a man with my hollow eyes, I see a creature woefully ov'rpowered. His face's a frozen mask of surprise, His shape reduced to a shadow of a coward. Men fear the authority I command, And yet are fascinated by its reach. For none escape the fatal grip of my hand But tremble at the lesson I teach. When I appear, all those who see me weep. Men turn pale, women scream and children howl. Simply because I bring eternal sleep, To man I am denounced as evil and foul.
